Mages Mages, also called Wizards are individuals who can wield Magic of any kind. Mages are wielders of Magic, using their Magic Power to cast spells and employ Magical objects. They comprise only 10% of the living population of Earth Land, with the remaining 90% being either unwilling to use Magic. They are often affiliated with a guild, where they can take on Jobs as a source of personal income and adventure. There are three main types of Mages in the world of Earthland: Legal Mages, Dark Mages and Independent Mages. Legal Mages Legal Mages are those who are a part of official guilds, take on legal jobs and usually heed the words of the Magic Council. These are the Mages people tend to look up to, These Mages become famous for their use of magic many of them earning a Nickname or Alias that suits either their magic or temperament. Dark Mages Mages who are members of Earth Land's illegal Dark Guilds, guilds which are not acknowledged as such by the Magic Council, having either lost their rights due to crimes, or having never been affiliated with the Council in the first place. They are guilds that the Council refuses to recognize. After being deprived of the Council's approval, guilds are ordered to disband, and, if they do not abide to such order and keep functioning, are then categorized as Dark Guilds, becoming known to all intents and purposes as criminal organizations. In collective imagination, Dark Mages usually have evil intentions, think little of others, putting their own desires first, and can be very cruel, if not downright insane. These Mages are said to take illegal Jobs and are reputed as the main opposition and threat to official guilds and to the Magic Council itself. These Mages become infamous for their use of magic many of them earning a Nickname or Alias to fit their magic or Temperament. Also as a not some Dark Mages have become so Infamous that the world government has put up a bounty for them dead or alive. Independent Mages Mages that are not officially recognized by the Magic Council and don't belong to either Legal Guilds or Dark Guilds, instead being part of the so-called Independent Guilds. Most of these Mages travel by themselves or in a band of a few friends together. They like the other Mages earn fame or infamy through their use of magic and can gain enough to receive an Alias or Nickname based on their temperament or magic. It is also not unheard of for an Independent Mage to have a bounty or even for an Independent Mage to be scouted by either Dark or Legal Guilds or even the Magic Council itself. Ranks Mages are officially ranked by the Magic Council who have given each Legal Guild Master a comprehensive guide on how to rank their Mages this why all the ranks given to a Mage carry over to other guilds making it an effective and comprehensive system. Dark Mages on the other hand are given their rank by the Magic Council personally who take into account magic power and threat to the general public which causes for a bit of a more flexible system then with the Legal Guilds as the Magic Council may deem someone a B ranked Dark Mage with a C ranked Magic Power due to their threat. Independent Mages are given a rank only once they have become known or if they register their power with the council (which all Mages are supposed to do but Dark Mages do not). There are five ranks D,C,B,A and S with S being the highest rank. However the gap between two Mages of the same rank (especially A and S rank) can be quite expansive. D Rank Basically Rookie Mages just stepping into the world of magic. C Rank This is a step above the basic and is the level that most consider the Mage to be able to utilize enough magic to truly be considered a Mage. B Rank Your average Mage will plateau at this level. This is also the level where the difference between Mages of the same rank truly starts to show itself with the lesser B ranks being a step above C ranks and the highest level B ranks being capable of advanced magic that the lower level B ranked mage could not control. A Rank These are considered Elite Mages that have come close to the pinnacle of Magic. Even those who have just made it in terms of being labeled A Ranked outclass the most advanced B rank by a substantial margin in Magic they can preform. The difference in ability between those within this rank is second only to S rank as some of the more advanced A rank Mages are capable of bewildering and destructive magic. S Rank These Mages are so strong they are spoken about as legends and a lot of the stories of their feats seem made up. These Mages are the only ones who could take up an S ranked Job which easily pays within the millions of Jewels but are extremely dangerous as one mistake could lead to the Mages death. The gap between these Mages is the most expansive as even though the lowest S ranked Mage far outclasses the highest A ranked Mage in terms of Magic ability the Highest of S ranked Mages do not appear human and employ magic that even other Mages find impossible.
